On motor homes there is sometimes a solenoid that isolates the two batteries when the engine isn't running.one battery runs the engine and lights, the other battery runs the coach lights .Some motorhomes use an isolator which is made up of Diodes.
On many Diesel p/u's there isn't anything except the cables.

ON OLDER CARS IT WAS KNOWN AS THE VOLTAGE REGULAR.
