Or is it just like i think and they change there minds so much that they don't even know what they want. Besides that, they will play hard to get even when they want a guy. Even when the guy knows that they want him. Seems pretty pointless

It's partially due to what our society "expects" of girls. Girls are brought up to play hard to get because they don't want to seem like they are too easy or too forward. Some girls like to make guys chase them and truth be told, some guys like the pursuit too.
Yes it is pointless but it's gonna be pretty hard if you want to change societal norms. That said, you can propably count yourself lucky if you manage to find a girl who doesn't resort to such games.

I think the 'because we can' response sums it up. Most of us guys aren't paying attention really to what our girlfriends and, subsequently, mistresses are talking about or doing because we're so focused on how we'll get them to take their pants off. Not paying attention kills us because before you know it, you're on some unbearable 5-day cabin visit in the middle of nowhere.
