It seems that with all of the people addicted to escapism such as TV or the internet, if something as realistic as The Matrix was real (touch, smell...) a lot of people would happily hook themselves in and forget to come back.

If it could take me away from my life for just a little while I would definately sign up!!! And you're right, I may just forget to come back.

I'm not convinced that "reality" is ontologically prior. We all want to say the real world explains the matrix, therefore everyone inside the matrix experiences delusion (since we grasp that which is really real).

Okay.

Suppose a set of subjects in the matrix witnessed a different world, one where they see that the "real worlders" are actually themselves! carefully tended brains in a vat. The matrix people see this 'in the image' as Putnam would say, that is, they experience a simulated representation. but are not causally linked to the source of these perceptions. And it happens to be the case that the simulation renders the real state of affairs most accurately. Yes, the real-worlders see people in a matrix, but the matrix people see what's really going on.

What does this show? It will take much more work than I care to devote atm. So far, (and doubtfully so) only that providing an explanation does not settle priority. The derivative, lesser phenomenon reduced to the realist's theory actually CANNOT be determined unless an observer could experience both phenomena.

I'm not satisfied.

Another case might be the following: consider a simulation that represents reality better. You plug your brain into the interface and can perceive wavelengths before imperceptible, see real phenomenon, in effect, that a human body has restricted access to. The simulation, which just maps reality in real time, would offer the subject phenomena that explains reality better.

Many people already have entered through drugs or alcohol. Some come back, some don't.

If you believe in radical doubt who's to say where not not already there? Just kidding, I guess it wouldn't really be that differant and it would give the planet a chance to rebound.

I'll admit it. I'd consider it. There are days I wonder if there'd be any loss.
