I had also gone through this predicament a few times
Not to be able to be at their side till their last breadth
Maybe it's their way of doing, so as not to hurt our feelings
They truly gave their best to us owners who love them
May they rest in peace
Knowing we will cherish them in our minds forever
The fun, warmth and loyalty they have given us

I've known of a few pets that have done this, most people say it is so they dont upset there owners, but honestly i think its more instinctive, in the wild they would not die in there den, or in the middle of where there pack sleeps, cuz it would attract predators and other unwanted guests, not only that, if they are sick, i think they would leave the pack as to not spread whatever it is making them sick.

I wondered that too.... I had a cat which did this some years ago and for your information CF_ I loved my cat very much and took her to the vets for regular check ups, she wasn't showing any signs of illness when she disappeared (she was found a few weeks later in a neighbours yard) AND it's actually cruel in my opinion to keep a cat permanently indoors.
Back to the question - I honestly don't know but I think they just want to find somewhere quiet and isolated to spend their last moments.

Pets usually know when they are going to die.
My pet cat wanted to go outside and she was quite desperate.I thought she just wanted to play and so i held my cat in my arms.
She took her last breath and died.
I think they do this because they have spent their lives with you and they dont want to be seen dying.

no loved pet ever "wandered off to die" because a good owner would have indoor only cats and the dogs would be in fully fenced yard..
most animals who die unseen have owners who are not aware the animal is suffering in the first place....
