The process is simple in most states. You go to the county clerk or the local county court, and get a form for name change. You usually do not need an attorney, though it's always a good idea if you have any legal questions.

The form, and what you need to do after filling it out, will vary by state, but it generally requires proof of identity (birth certificate, green card, etc.) and a small fee. Some states also require you to go before a judge and explain why you are changing your name. But it's not a very complicated process in most situations.
