I think that nobody gave correct answer for it. To know more about earthquake and Tsunami please visit my slide show. There is no direct connection between the magnitudes in Richter scale to the destruction. Richter scale 7.6 earthquake in Gujarat in India in the year 2001 we lost the life of 100,000. But the Richter scale 8 nearly more than twice its strength in Japan there were only 400 people injured. The same way all the earthquake generated in sea will not create Tsunami. The force should be released in sea. That too the tectonic plate should have moved up and down. Even if the earthquake generated in island can also create Tsunami. I am the man issued the warning 2 hours before it struck our Indian coast. But my alert message was ignored by our local T.V.Stations. Now after 22 months they agreed that they have received the warning from me. To know more about earthquake and Tsunami please visit my slide show at URL.

Tsunami is big, huge wave pounding on the shoreline. This huge wave is formed due to the displacement of water is a extremely large scale. E.g. the undersea earthquake this cause the displacement of the seabed plate. When the big piece of earth got push around, it pushes the water which resulted in wave coming to shore in a destructive manner. Even lake can have such incident, places like anchorage - canada, the glacier move, drop into the lake and will cause a great wave to pound on the otherside of the lake. its just like dropping a brick into a bucket of water.

The Japanese word tsunami means harbor wave.
The source is an earthquake below the ocean.
Far from the coast it is harmless
When the water comes near the coast all the kinetic energy concentrates to a thinner layer of water. So the wave accelerates.
