I'm trying to upgrade the memory on my kid's computer. Its a Gateway, about 4 years old - don't know the exact model; can't find the documentation.

It has 2 memory slots and 1 memory module which says the following on it:

128Mb, DDR, 333, CL2.5, PC2700v

I know what the 128mb and DDR mean. My questions are:

1. What does the "CL2.5" mean?

2. Will the machine take a 512mb, 256mb, or 1gb module? (or 2 of each?)

Thanks - any general memory info you can give me that will help me buy the right module would be much appreciated!

C.L 2.5 is the CAS Latency of the RAM, it is a bit complicated for a novice but if you really wanna know what it is take a read:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAS_Latency
otherwise just know that the lower it is the better.

As for how much it will take, it will obviously take two, its hard to know how big it will take for sure, but I can say with almost certainty it will take at least 512MB sticks, so you can get two for a total of 1GB. I would recommend you go to crucial.com and use their memory tool to be sure, or see if you can find your model number and email it to me and I can look it up.

Anyway, assuming all works out and it can take 512 sticks, I would recommend purchasing this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220057
It is good quality for a good price. Just take out your old stick and replace it with these two. Its speed is higher than yours currently, but that is okay as the RAM will automatically slow itself down to meet your requirements, and if you are lucky and your computer will support it will be able to run at the higher speed.

If you need any further help, please feel free to email me.

ok you're complicated all and sundry with all your info. RAM is in basic terms memory. while you're taking some out and go away some in it wont remember squat. the only element which will exchange would be how briskly the pc will run. while you're taking some out, then it is going to run classes slower than it would if it had extra RAM. Thats it. It doesnt remember if the pc is new, previous, semi-new, sort new, out-of-the-container, dusty previous, or regardless of. a sparkling pc will stay a sparkling pc in case you placed extra or much less ram in it. an identical for an previous pc, it will stay previous while you're taking or do away with ram. basically its performance transformations. in case you intend to do away with ram from a sparkling pc and provide the pc lower back they're going to observe the adaptation. they are in a position to fully tell and you gets fined/prosecuted. in basic terms purchase a sparkling stick of ram like all and sundry else and evade the disgrace, its inexpensive and properly actually worth the fee. Capisc?

The easiest thing to do is to go to crucial.com and use their memory configurator to see what kind of memory Crucial sells for that model. Then make sure the specs of the memory you want to use match what they list.
