...clearly it is. People do what they can get away with. If they don't have to cook, they don't, if they don't have to walk they don't. Then patterns become routines, routines become entire lives.
I watched a program in Australia a few days ago about the most obese people from the States...I was shocked by their size & how they were bedridden by their weight...one guy was around 880lbs+!!! - who had not walked in 6 years & if rolled onto his back would suffocate from his fat in his sleep !!! )-: his wife still snuck in snacks for him into the hospital.
Obviously u dont get to that size in a week, month, year but a lifetime...I went to my school reunion in Jan and some girl who was hot in high school and was a size 6, had put on about 90/110lbs on her 5'1'' frame!! She was wearing a poncho! lol
In Australia the news recently had new legislation that might be signed banning junk food to be sold in the school canteens!
Recent surveys state that this generation will be the first to actually be outlived by their parents...and that they considered obesity and childhood obesity an epedemic...obesity was defined on that tv show as someone that is 45 kgs(99lbs) over their ideal average weight for their height...!!!
It's a combo of carelessness, routine, and the mentality of fast food franchises in America...supersizing etc and one store on every corner etc...it makes it too easy...I wouldn't only blame them...people are just getting smarter and lazier with every generation...

Sligo is right - it was on Oprah this week.
We need to eat foods that look like the original food, such as corn on the cob. lettuce. Not bleached flour, not fruit juice made with 10% jiuce and 90% corn syrup. In the 60's we ate almost no corn syrup. Today in the U.S. we consume 60 lbs. of it per year per person. It's in so many foods, and of course sodas. The corn syrup tells you to keep eating!

I think that you have to look at what is being put into the foods. We are becoming lazy and looking for the "quick-fix". We don't want to spend hours making dinner, so we either get take-out or something that comes in a package that you have to heat up or something like that. There are so many additives in the foods today, do we really know what they are and what their side-effects are?

I think a bigger factor is the lack of exercise in America.
I often am struck with the irony of how me have used technology & wealth to do all our required chores with little physical effort.
Then we use even more of our technology & wealth to go to the gym to get the exercise we supposedly liberated our selves from in the first place.

the food industry is secretly putting hunger-enhancing chemicals in the fast food so that we can crave more and of course not enough exercise.

i think there's just way to much food available. american consumer indulgence is rampant, and people think of food as just another product to over-consume.
another thing: biologically, humans are programmed to protect themselves against starvation by storing fat. our culture has evolved so rapidly that our bodies haven't had time to evolve to adjust. so americans eat and eat and their bodies just store it.

Fructose corn syrup- seen it? It numbs the nerve in your stomach that tells you you're full. Start looking for it on labels- it'll show up.

because they are always in a hurry and grab what ever is quick, instead of something thats good for them., and to many gadgets to do things for them, so they don't have to get off their butts and do it themselves---
