These sayings were made popular during WWII, when it's better to have something that works rather than something that's 'fixed' and no longer working. There were plenty of other things in those days to direct your good intentions towards.

closely related is if it's making a funny sound turn up the radio. maybe that's not related at all, but it works!

I remember the saying as:
If it ain't broke,
don't fix it.
Unfortunately, the place I just retired from had a different belief and that was:
Keep fixing it, until you break it.

people have carved up the original saying so many ways but the true saying goes like this<"if it not broke don't fix it". meaning if it works ok do not go tinkering with it
