I am thinking about watching this anime... is it any good?

I've seen a lot of anime, and Utena is my very favorite. I'd definatly recomend you checking it out. I've read the regular manga and movie-based manga as well as watching the tv show and seeing the movie, and my favorites are as follows: TV Show, Manga, Movie Manga, Movie. I liked the movie, too, but it was on alot of crack. :) (and don't try watching it before the tv show, or it will make even -less- sense. It's.... kind of metephorical, and abstract)
The Utena TV series starts out a bit strange yet highly amusing, and as the series progresses the storyline gets much darker. (which I think makes it much more intense and interesting) Layers are revealed that begin to explain what's going on with all of these strange and interesting characters. I always tell people watching the TV series "Stick with it! It gets better!" I think it really starts getting great around episode 25.
There are (fairly mild) elements of homosexuality, so if this bothers you, yes, this may not be the anime for you. For some characters this is debatable (less so in the movie) but it is still present for others. There are also some other mature themes that arise later in the series that may bother people as well.
Some earlier episodes get a bit repetitive, and the animation quality is not on par with some of the more modern anime shows, but overall, I thought the story was so worth it that this didn't matter.
That being said, if you're looking for a funny, interesting, complex and emotionally exciting show that challenges ideas of gender stereotypes and tells a great story (if not a bit odd), then I'd definatly recomend you check this one out. I'm glad I did! :)

Better off reading it in manga form. The does get weird at a point where you just get confused and disappointed. And dont EVEN bother with the movie. Despite that i watched the Utena movie first before the series. It's the most god awefull piece of crap that i've ever seen. Only the manga is pretty decent.

The movie sucks, it has some good animtion but its so abstract I had to listen to the Director commentary to understand it. Also I think there is a hint of Lesbianism in it. If thats your type of thing then go for it. I was so unimpressed by the movie I have refused to watch the the series.

The TV series is funny and very quotable at times in the first dozen episodes. But it gets very, very weird; especially later on.
Avoid the movie based on the series at all costs.
