Just to be a contrarian: NO. If you can't look at a beautiful sunset and know what you have, then its a shame. If what you mean is: "Is it true that you never miss what you have until it's gone?" then thats obvious. If the former is true for you then I guess you have never heard "There but for the grace of God, go I". Maybe its time Wake up and stop being so self-absorbed that you can't see what you got. We all have something that no one else has!
ANd the world has plenty of need for people to give of themselves. How do you give unless you know that you've got something that others do not? It is too bad that many times we take for granted what we got. As you get older that won't be so true. The hourglass does run out.

It doesn't always have to be true that you never know what you have until it's gone. Sometimes, you can know what you have and abuse before you lose. Other times, you can be blind until the truth hits you in the face, wakes you up/shakes you up, and reveals to you what you once couldn't see.

Not to me, I know the precious worth of the love that is in my life, and I am very aware of the greatness of it and its worth to me. No, I know what I have right now and I will cherish the loves in my life (wife, children & family) forever!

More people should take the time out right NOW and realize the gifts that we have been given! Don't wait until you let them slip right through your hands because you took them for granted or ignored them.

No, because you can have something that you really know is precious and wonderful, but in your stupidity or because of reasons beyond your control, it still slips out of your grasp, so this principle doesn't apply 100% of the time.
