"During the 1995-96 season, Roseanne gave birth to a fourth child, Jerry Garcia Conner (the actress was also pregnant in real life), while Dan suffered a near-fatal heart attack during Darlene and David's wedding; the pair ended the season with a major fight and a temporary separation. The plot device was meant to accommodate John Goodman, who wanted to appear in fewer episodes as his film career began to take off."
"In the fall of 1996, Roseanne, Dan and Jackie became multi-million dollar Illinois State lottery winners. The entire season showed how the family tried to keep their good fortune from changing their ways. But for many fans, the lottery win was a betrayal of the original concept behind Roseanne."
"The series finale on May 20th, 1997 had Darlene giving birth to Harris Conner Healy. In the final minutes, viewers also learned that the entire final season of Roseanne was a figment of Roseanne's literary imagination. The family did NOT win the lottery, while Dan actually died after suffering a second heart attack. Roseanne decided to move on with her life by becoming a writer."

I have to admit that I stopped watching it around it's second-to-last or last season. I thought it started to lose it's edge a little towards the end. What I really liked about the show it how "real" it was. The plot lines were taken from real family issues. The characters were familiar, people you could really relate with. The clothing the cast members wore was comfortable and affordable - the kind of thing real people in middle class families actually wore. Remember the chicken shirt? Roseanne and Dan had jobs that Americans could relate to. Everyone could relate to Roseanne's dead-end jobs, and struggled with her when she and/or Dan were out of work. They had a home with decorations and appliances that were believable, and within their price range. I often wonder if there will ever be another TV show like it. I doubt there ever will be, as producers don't want ratty blankets, dusty houses and off-the-rack clothes on TV - they want edgy high fashion glittery things that they can mass market and sell for big bucks! Even reality TV shows don't show "real" people - they follow around the rich and spoiled.

It depends on which made up story you want to believe. After his heart attack the show took a turn that was supposedly made up and all in Roseanne's mind. He died in the "real life" part of the show, but in the other version they divorced for good. He had that affair with his mom's nurse and fell in love with her. I'm pretty sure he went back to CA.

The second half to the final episode of the series. The Connors gather around the table as Darlene brings home their newborn baby. Then, the plot turns around you find out some interesting infromation from Roseanne. Warning Spoiler Below...scroll down:
Dan actually died from the heart attack. They never won the lottery. She switched the couples around, so Mark and Darlene were actually dating, and David and Becky were dating. We find out that Jackie was gay. Then, at the final moments, after everyone fades away, we find Roseanne in the basement, in her old writting room, that the kids made for her earlier in the series.(We can guess that she made up Seasons 4-9 for the story) She then walks up stairs and through the old kitchen and walks into the old livingroom, and sits on their old couch.
