A hand is 4" measured up to the withers (where the neck meets the shoulders). So 15.1 hands is just over 5' and 16 hands is about 5'4" at the top of the shoulders.

A hand is a form of measurement used to tell the height of a horse. One hand is equal to 4 inches. The horse is measured from the ground to the top of the withers. So a horse that is 15 hands high (abbreviated 15 hh) is 60 inches from the ground to the top of the withers. There are also smaller increments used between the hands. A horse 61 inches tall would be 15.1 hh (said "fifteen one hands high"). A horse 62" would be 15.2 hh, 63" would be 15.3 hh, 64" would be 16 hands high.

One hand = 4 inches and is measured the withers (shoulder blades)

15.1 = 61 inches, or 5' 1"

16 = 64 inches, or 5' 4"

a hand is 4 inches. and that is taken for the wither (the end of the neck and the start of the back). when they say 15.1 it means 15 hand + 1 inch. email me if you have more questions.

a HAND is Definately 4 inches. It stems from the fact that a long time ago the average hand was 4" wide and it was a common measurement of the height of a horse from the ground to the top of his/her withers (base of neck/top of back)
