A hand is 4" measured up to the withers (where the neck meets the shoulders). So 15.1 hands is just over 5' and 16 hands is about 5'4" at the top of the shoulders.

1 hand is 4 inches you always measure on a flat surface to get the most accyrate measurement.You measure from the ground to the highest point of the withers.Also 15.1 meand 15 hands and 1 inch. I hope this helps.

a HAND is Definately 4 inches. It stems from the fact that a long time ago the average hand was 4" wide and it was a common measurement of the height of a horse from the ground to the top of his/her withers (base of neck/top of back)
