Dec,1959-quote by William O. Douglas (1898-1980), U.S. Supreme Court Justice

Also.....
The privacy and dignity of our citizens are being whittled away by sometimes imperceptible steps. Taken individually, each step may be of little consequence. But when viewed as a whole, there begins to emerge a society quite unlike any we have seen – a society in which government may intrude into the secret regions of a person's life.-William O. Douglas

"yupchagee" I would rather see 100 guilty men go free than to see one innocent man be locked up for something he didn't do.

First question - Yes. It is a greater crime to send innocent people to jail - or worse.

We are right to take alarm at the first experiment upon our liberties.

I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.
James Madison

Only if you can prove over a period of many years that such a policy actually reduces overall crime and does not have consequences in other areas. I have not seen actual significant reductions in crime over long periods of time where liberties have been reduced, have you?

You might be making a rhetorical case for communism. If in fact the cold-war soviet union had less crime that our country during those years, was it worth the fact that we contributed much more to humanity than they did and invented much more?

Freedom may make for more evil but it also makes for more good. I believe that our politicians and police are ignorant to the reasons why half this country seems to be rooting for the terrorists. The fact that those in charge do not trust the citizens may be catching more criminals but it is taking its toll on patriotism. Who wants to fight for a country that mistrusts them?

As long as the results are obscured, our civilization will continue to decline, perhaps be assimilated into Mexico, perhaps destroyed by drugs as we lose self respect, perhaps be defeated in war due to an apathetic public.

It was said especially in death penalty cases, better 100 guilty men be freed than 1 innocent man put to death.. i think that in our society that somehow this has been lost and manipulated by a corrupt legal system based on the wealthy over the poor

Temporary steps related to war are necessary. But they should be temporary as determined by our elected congress and the sentate.
Anyway, how many of you really need to hide things? I don't know about you but my life is pretty much an open book anyway.

My answer to your first question is yes. You might expect that from me.

The second question requires, for me, a divergence of thought.

I can agree with your premises but disagree with your approach. Copout? Perhaps...

That has long been the "conventional wisdom". IMHO, "conventional wisdom" is the penultimate oxymoron.
Do you think it is better to let a guilty man go free & commit other horific acts?
