Technically, the President serves as Commander in Chief of the military, signs bills into law, appoints certain offices and performs duties as defined under the U.S. Constitution (See Article on the Executive branch).
In practice, since people look to the President as a leader and spokesperson on behalf of the U.S. this office is used to posture in the media, to maintain domestic stability by appeasing the public, while presenting a strong front on the international scene to promote respect and security on that level.
Whether or not the President or the people feel this is being achieved, or what decisions maintain the social order, is up to them. I believe people in general try to do what they think is best, but tend to project their biases onto others. So people's perception of others is a revealing reflection of themselves.
Bush is equally criticized by the far left and far right. I believe he is not so much pushing his own agenda, but like any other person in public office is pressured on all sides to find the middle ground between them. I personally think Gen. Colin Powell has more potential to bring various parties together to agree on solutions. His experience in diplomacy and military leadership gives him more insight into what is truly required to achieve this end.

Well going by our current president his job is to kill as many of the troops as he can, make as money off of gas as he can, make as many people mad as he can, and just to act like an idiot. I think he kida rewrote the responsbilities of the presidency, because he doesn't care at all for the American people.

The President of the U.S., as CHIEF EXECUTIVE, has the prime obligation to see that U.S. policy is carried out. He is part of the EXECUTIVE BRANCH of our government. Simply put, he EXECUTES FEDERAL POLICY.
