If a comment was posted online to an online chat board, how difficult will it be for someone to find out who did it? Everyone always talks about how easy it is to trace someone, yet whenever I look for information about it, I find it's not true at all. In fact, I heard without a court order it's tough to figure out who posted things to an online chat board or even created an online website.

It *is* easy for the website owner or chat board moderator.

It is normally not easy or even possible for anyone else to get this information.

All a normal person can do is whois the IP and find out what the ISP is and possibly the city their in. But not all the time will the IP that the city is in will actually be where the user is.

Try this site:

http://www.ipaddressguide.com/ip2location.aspx

It shows a map of where the IP is connecting to the internet. Note, however, that it really just shows where their ISP is connected, so sometimes it's way off.
