I'm sorry, but these other answers are off the mark. A revolution is not always related to wars or fights. As a matter of fact, most revolutions do not involve fighting at all. A revolution is basically when something happens that produces a major change in the human status quo. For example, the Neolithic Revolution was when humans switched from hunting and gathering as their primary way of getting food to farming. The Industrial Revolution marked the time when humans switched to machinery as the way of producing manufactured goods. Revolutions are necessary because they help the human race function in its most productive way. Don't just limit your answer to wars and fighting. I hope this helps. -MM

Revolution, forcible, pervasive, and often violent change of a social or political order by a sizable segment of a country's population. Revolution is the most extreme political option of a dissenting group, a course taken generally when more moderate and legal attempts to achieve recognition or reform have failed. Even when fomented by a political minority, revolutions usually reflect a general climate of discontent. Whether occurring spontaneously, which is rare, or through careful planning, revolutions depend for their success on crucial timing, the fostering of popular support, and the nucleus of a new governmental organization. In modern history, perhaps the most important revolution, in terms of its contagious effect on other nations, was the American Revolution, although some historians would define it as a war of independence rather than a revolution. A war of independence is an armed struggle by one nation against an alien colonial power; it need not lead to revolutionary changes but only to an indigenous government in a sovereign state.

Modern societies owe much to past uprisings against repressive governments, stagnant or restrictive economic conditions, and rigid class divisions. On the other hand, revolutions have often replaced one evil with another, as through harsh recriminations, self-serving leadership, or betrayal of the people; these excesses sometimes lead to opposing counterrevolutions. A sudden challenge to a given social order can in itself be beneficial in awakening and testing a society.

A revolution is distinguished from a coup d'etat, which is a sudden seizure of state power by a small faction or element of the government; a coup does not necessarily cause profound, far-reaching change in the social system. Distinction should also be made between a revolution and revolt or a rebellion, which may be either a failed attempt at revolution, a violent expression of grievances with limited purpose, or merely a change in allegiance. The term revolution is more broadly applied to any significant historical transformation.

Just a note about doing ones own homework - good on you for asking here. Some people will read, some listen to lecturers, some talk to people. You decided to ask here and you are getting a good range of answers. Good luck with your homework.

I think revolution is what happens when a ruling body is challenged. It seeks change and usually involves social upheaval because an oppressed sector of society decides to stand up for itself and fight to gain a better quality of life and address injustices.

Okay, I love helping people out but the reason I know the answer to this question, and for me it's pretty easy, is because I studied in school and did my hw. Push yourself. Do your own work. Become an intelligent member of society so we don't have as many idiots running it. Do your own homework.

below are some links. I would suggest crossreferencing sources though. one source listed is wikipedia and it can be a good starting place, but i would use it for keywords and google those keywords and possible the word "sociology" with whatever keywords you might find, as sociology is the study of human social patterns, and revolutions have a lot to do with human social patterns ^_~

good luck!!

Revolutions occur when people are dissatisfied with their situations and they believe that their initiation of change will result in an improved state. Revolution is necessary to correct wrongs and to empower those who feel powerless.

It is when a government opresses it's people so badly, they revolt against the government and establish a new government. Like when France had a king and royal family that lived a life of luxury, while the people starved.
