You have to start with James Brown. He is the father of funk. Get a greatest hits album. I suggest the 50th anniversary collection two disc set. If that is a bit much, get the 20 greatest hits album released back in 1995 or so.

The classic stuff you can grab on compilation records: Parliament, James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Charles Wright, The Ohio Players.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers worked with George Clinton on the album Blood Sugar Sex Majik. Look into the Beastie Boys on Check Your Head and Ill Communication.

G Love and Special Sauce are one of my favorite bands. They may end up being your favorite out of all the ones on this list. Ben Harper is great too. Jack Johnson is a little more watered down, but they all hang together.

Citizen King is a good high energy funk band from a few years back.

Fishbone is a little more into the punk and ska scene, but they have some high points you may want to add to your collection.

Living Colour is another one from the early nineties.

Soul Coughing put out awesome albums in the mid to late 90's. Their lead singer Mike Doughty is still touring and recording solo.

This answer is actually to one of your earlier questions - I only just saw it today and it's already closed. You were asking about free iPods in Canada. There are lots of free iPods sites out there on the net, some are legit and some aren't. In my opinion, the best one is TRAINN which ships to Canada. I just got an 80GB iPod from them, totally free. Earlier this year I got a 30GB. Let me know if you want any more information about this - I've been working on these online freebies for a while (currently working on getting a 8gb nano). I won't spam you with my link unless you are interested, but I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. Feel free to catch me on AIM at JennyWrenIpod or on Yahoo messenger at jennywrenbookwyrm.

Cheers!

Parliament! They are OLLLD school and awesome. George Clinton branched off and went solo, and he too is amazing.
