I'm using a Lincoln MIG welder...how do you know when you run out of gas? Both dials on the tank stay down - I can't seem to put pressure on the line, could the tank be empty?

The valve is open - yes I know what weld looks like when there is no shielding gas to protect it.

those dials are regulators and yes when they read nothing usually that means the tank is empty. But a better indication is the porosity ( lots of holes in your weld) if you'd like to know about welding email me. I've been a welder for 35 years and have done many different types of welding since I was 15 years old.

If you are going to be welding cycle frames and other light material you would be better off with a mig machine. Much faster, neater and easier to learn. However, three hundred dollars won't go to far towards a good, intermediate machine. You may have to settle for a smaller, lighter unit and work your way up. Lincoln is probably the chevy of welders, not expensive but not real quality either. In my opinion, Hobart and Miller build better machines but, of course are usually more pricey. Visit a dealer for any of the brands and usually they will be happy to demonstrate the machines and answer any questions you have.

Usually, you'll be able to make the pressure setting you need at the control valve. When you can no longer retain that pressure setting, the tanks are used down to that or below that pressure and have to be changed out.

By saying the gauges stay down do you mean down to the right?
If the gauges on the tank do not move up (to the left) them they are most likely empty.

The tanks might be empty....or the valve might be shut off.

best way to tell if tank is empty is to remove regulatore and crack open tank. if it hisses real loud its not empty. if it hisses quietly than its empty. keep in mind you will never get the bottle completely empty.
