I am from New York, and I love my accent. I moved down to Houston and I don't want to have that southern/country accent. What can I do to maintain my New York accent?

It's not easy to just talk with my New York accent...It's natural, to the point I never knew I had an accent until I moved down here. I'm afraid I'm going to get use to how people talk here and start talking normally to the point I'm talkin like them.

I'm with you, only opposite. I moved from Texas to a state farther north, and I wanted to keep my accent. What I did was, first, I listened to the people around me to hear how they speak differently. I noticed that my neighbors don't say "y'all" so I made special effort to hold onto that word. I also observed other quirks about the language around me, and learned some new ones about mine that I've worked to hang on to. My advice: it takes a concious effort to keep an accent. You probably won't always have a perfect New York accent, but you can at least make it recogniseable as northern.

STAY IN NY IF IT'S THAT BIG OF DEAL TO YOU BECAUSE YOU WILL SOUND A LITTLE BIT LIKE THEM EVENTUALLY. I'VE NOTICED THOUGH FROM EXPERIENCE OF GOING TO SCHOOL IN THE SOUTH AND KNOWING PEOPLE FROM NY THAT GO TO SCHOOL THERE AS WELL, THEY TEND TO KEEP THEIR ACCENT WHEN THEY SAY CERTAIN WORDS. BUT MIDWESTERNERS LIKE ME, WE SOUND JUST LIKE THE PEOPLE WE ARE SURROUNDED BY DO. NOBODY CAN TELL I'M FROM THE NORTH ANYMORE. AND WHEN I GO HOME THEY MAKE FUN OF THE WAY I TALK BECAUSE I SOUND COUNTRY. IT DOESN'T BOTHER ME THOUGH

Chances are you won't lose it. That's unfortunate though because the TEXAS accent is way hotter! Best of luck!

What's the difference? You'll just be trading one goofy-*** accent for another.

If you don't want to lose that annoying whine from the east coast, move back there. Why did you move in the first place?

Don't worry, hon, to the folks in Texas, you'll sound like a yankee no matter what!

God love ya...
