ssshh, hi!

to expand upon what the others have already told you: GSM technology is available in 3 different frequencies, i.e. 800Mhz, 1800Mhz, 1900Mhz.

the higher the frequency, the more technologically advanced it is, and the more efficient it is. but frequency is government controlled. in india, the Government first opened GSM Frequencies of 800Mhz only. the second phase of expansion allowed 1800Mhz (which unfortunately isn't really the best as far as network coverage is concerned)

in Europe, Japan, and Australia, they've allowed operators to use the 1900Mhz range too... as this lets them provide 3G services (the most advanced technology for mobile telephony today) to their customers.

now a handset that's not equipped to handle another frequency won't be able to log onto the said Network. an older Nokia 5110 handset would work only on a 800Mhz network, as it's a mono-band handset. most handsets today are dual-band, and would log into all the operators in the country, as there are only 2 frequencies in india.

a tri-band handset would let you use any european, japanese or australian network were you to go there on roaming... or even if you used one of their SIMs with your handset...

hope this helped... do write me direct if you require more clarification...

enjoy!

Tri Band Phone

dual band: works on two frequencys, triband means works on 3 frequencys but the best phone to get is a quad band because that works on all frequencies: there are 4 frequencies in north america so essential having a quad band you'll have more service in more places

It's the actual frequency the phone connects with the network on. The main U.S. frequencies are 850mhz and 1900mhz Overseas and just about everywhere else uses 900mhz/1800mhz quad band has all four frequencies. Now if your talking CDMA....then your probably talking digital and AMPS but that is quickly fading away.

Kristen is right let me add my input........ just because you have dual tri or quad band phone it necessarily does not mean that's its Sim unlocked, all USA carriers lock their phone to their band (service) so you can't use another carriers Sim card in it .it is possible to have them unclocked by you making request to them, or pay for it to have it unlocked,
