I'm from South Carolina, so I know what you mean. I find that if I'm around people with accents different from mine, I get less SOuthern in my speech.

Even so, I'm a little torn by how southern accents (and people) are stereotyped. A friend of mine from Dallas, who had a really thick accent, used to respond to people's questions about it by saying "I don;t have an accent."

Smart people with southern accents might help change the stereotype.

Why not try watching "My Fair Lady." It's about a cockney woman who learns to speak "high class."

I have considering that stopped doing that.... *blush*

Be proud of your accent. It is part of who you are. I have a southern accent and live in the midwest. It's how people identify me. I love it when I have to make a business call and I get someone from the south. We have a connection!

Practice reading Shakespeare aloud?

accents are affected by environment, stay in the south, sound like a southerner.

I'm from SC and most folks think I'm from California, 20+ years will do that I guess

there are teachers who teach persons to learn to drop accents.
I would think if you just hang around with people who don't have the accent you would begin to moderate it.
