When I lived in New York, the roaches I saw at work were tiny in comparison to the ones I've seen here in Arkansas. I'm seeing bugs that are 3 to 4 inches long, large enough to throw a saddle on, and take for a ride! The ones I've seen in NY were only 1/2 to 1" long. My friend says they are called wood roaches...different than the cockroach kind.Is this true or is she pulling my leg?

In reality there are a variety of roaches, what you see in NY is different at what you see in Florida, but they are all members of the very same species, the real name is cockroaches and some people to abreviate call them roaches..☺

I don't know what the names are, but you are certainly seeing a different variety of roaches. When I lived in the pine forests of Texas, we had huge roaches like the ones you are describing, and I was told it was because of the trees. But other places I've seen small roaches like the other ones you're describing; I'm sure it's just a different variety.

roaches tend to get bigger in humid warmer areas. NY is pretty cold for long periods.so lots of little guys but..

you ain't seen nothing yet.

Blaberus giganteus, the giant cockroach, is one of the world's largest cockroaches, potentially longer than the giant burrowing cockroach, though not as heavy. Their length can reach 90 mm.
Giant cockroaches are found in tropical areas of Panama, the West Indies, and northern South America. They live in quiet, dark, humid caves in rainforests. They are also sometimes sold as exotic pets.

sweet dreams.

they have wood rocahes in arkansas palmetta bugs in fl but they all turn out to be plain old roaches. they just grow larget in the south due to the longer warmer growing season. if they come into the house they are cock roaches get the bug man to spray your house regulary and you will not have a problem with them. those things are nasty and can cause you serious problems.
