They don't work. Why? Because search engines don't like them. In fact, Google has famously banned Web Position Gold software and other similar software.

I suggest you check the search engines webmaster guidelines. Here's a quote from Google's Webmaster Guidelines:

----------------------------------------
Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.
----------------------------------------

If you don't want to be banned, avoid those website promotion packages.

I have not had any luck. I spent $600 and got zero results. Since being burned, I learned what I can and I now have top placements for my site, and others I've done. In fact, I just did a site in September and they already show up in the number 1 position on a major search engine....leaving out names since I don't know what is allowed or not here...

I'd be happy to help you if I can. My contact info is on my site.

Manual submission to search engines can never be topped by automatic submissions, because softwares don't customise your entries, whereas most search engines have some personalised criterias, completing which enhances your chances of getting indexed.
It can be a pain to submit to all search engines manually, as there r so many of them, but try to do it manually for at least the major ones, namely Yahoo, MSN, Google & AskJeeves.
Hope that helps :)
