use
Kaspersky internet security suite Anti-Virus 6.0
scan pc in safe mode
defrag windows as welll

lets get that out of ur pc ur some antivirus will miss key keylogger and trojans . frist of all you need to download avg antispyware this is verry good in getting all kinda bad files . then you need to download Adaware
a-squared< is verry good in picking up traking software files that is on the pc and it will find them . then download antispyware blocker that will find any type of virus . trojans files with antispyware blocker when you run that at the top of the box ur see
C:\ WINDOWS
remove the word windows and just leave in

C:\

then hit scan it will search all of the pc every file for virus or trojans and this will not have any problem with ur antivirus you have i have this my self .

then download spyware doctor that will search the pc for even more spyware adaware . just having 1 or 2 antispyware dont cut any ice at all you neeed what i said to download . when you have them run ur pc in safemode and scan the pc with then 1 at a time . this way from safemode the trojan and keylogger cant hide them self coz there is not internet access on in safe mode all the software i said to download will get the trojans and keylogger

if they say some are in the registry you watch what path there in and get in the registry and right hit on that folder and hit remove dont worry when the pc restart up win xp will creat a new clean folder for you

Be patient and do the following steps, (I think you only did (1) and (12) from the list below)

1. Run Disk clean-up. Then delete unused files. (start>program>accessories>sys... tools> disk clean-up)
2. Check for disk errors. (right click on a disk-drive>properties>tools >error checking)
3. Run disk defragmenter.
4. Delete cookies. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
5. Delete cache or temporary files. (you can do it from your browser options) or, click on 'start", 'run', type 'temp' then click ok. Whatever shows up, just delete.
6. Delete all history files. (you can do it from your browser options, or, CTRL + H, then delete)
7. Empty recycle bin.
8. Delete unused icons & short-cuts from anywhere including desktop.
9. Uninstall any software or game that you use only once or twice in a week.
10. Delete temporary internet files. (you can do it from your browser options: tools>internet options)
11. Delete all recent files. (click on start, click run, then type "recent", delete all the files which show up)
12. Run a full virus scan. If any threat found, eliminate that completely.
13. Run a software which can remove any spyware or adware.
Like: Ad Aware, Windows defender etc.

If you did these all at the same time, restart your computer. All these to be done once in a week if possible, depending on the frequency of use of your PC.

* Updating: (Needed only when updates are available)
14. Update your Windows by installing latest updates.
15. Update your audio & video drivers.
16. Update softwares, browsers, games that you use.
17. Add another 512 mb of RAM. It should not cost more than $30.

By asking a more specific question. Generally? Add more memory (RAM) - Windows XP works best with at least 1GB. If it's an older computer, (like 1990s), buy a new one. Defragmenting sometimes helps. If your hard drive's almost full (go to my computer, right-click on your hard drive, and click on properties.) If it's mostly full, it's gonna be slow. Get a bigger hard drive. If the internet's slow, get a faster connection. If you have dial-up, get DSL. If you have DSL, get faster DSL. If you have faster DSL, get cable. If you already have cable, get faster cable. If you have faster cable and it's still slow, get DSL!

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Get rid of porn if you have any, virus scan regularly, make sure your desktop isn't to cluttered.

Also, defregment your computer by going start, right click on my computer, click manage, and then pick disk defragmenter. Make surfe that you have some free space on your computer to do this.

You can also always exit out of any programs that to aren't using so that you have more RAM.

You mention that it is a Compaq.
I assume that you bought it "pre-loaded".

Like what the others said, get rid of unneeded programs and files, defrag, etc.

BUT, I hate to tell you, your pre-load has so much Compaq "junk" that you can't get rid of, that it will always be slower than a similar system that was built or purchased WITHOUT the OS and then loaded from the CD('s).
Hewlett-Packard and Compaq (a subdivision) load a whole lot of things on their pre-loads that are only of use THROUGH or FOR them. (A whole lot are hidden in the system files and are interlinkd so that they can NOT be removed without messing up the system!!)

Use the "Help and Support" feature to cleanup disk, compress, defrag your files vs. deleting files manually.

Suggest, if you are a Yahoo- DSL customer, to download "AT&T Yahoo!Online protection".

If not, go to http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_antispyware, scroll down a little bit and click "Free download".

Or last, but not for free, upgrade your memory / CPU.
