three girls ate lucn at the local restaruant. it cost 30 dollars and they paid 10 each. the manager noticed that by mistake they were overcharged by 5 dollars, and asked the waiter to return the 5, since 5 is not easily divisible by three and since the waiter was not very honest, he decided to keep 2 dollars for himself and returned one dollars to each of the three girls. so the girls only paid 9 each for the total of 27 for the lucn. if we add to this the 2 dollars that the waiter kept we get a total of 29. where did the missing dollars go

That is so tricky! I'll bet nobody gets it right. After all, nobody has yet.

There is a trick in this question. What you have to keep in mind is 3+2=5.

You are trying to account for 5 dollars. When you are multiplying 9 by 3 to get 27, you are taking 3 away from 30. To correctly account for the 5 dollars, you should then subtract two (remeber, 3+2=5...3 dollars given to people + two dollars kept but the waiter is 5 dollars).

What the problem is doing is subtracing $3 from $30 ($9 times 3), then adding $2 back in. In this case, 3-2 does not equal 5, it equals 1 (hence the $29).

The girls first paid $10 each. 3 X 10 = 30.

Waiter gives $3 back to each of the girls, therefore each girl pays $9 (10 - 1) X 3= 27.

Add the $2 the waiter kept = $29.

There ya go!

If the lunch was 25 and he returned 1 dollar to each that would have brought the total to 28 dollars. The 2 he kept for himself makes 30. Where is the math problem?

yes it is a trick question.

the trick is making you think that the money should add up to $30. It shouldn't - it should add up to $25 (the $30 they paid minus the $5 they got back)

the girls got $9 each so they paid $27 - the waiter kept $2 and you subtract that to get $25, which is what they should rightfully have paid.
