The biggest mistake is letting the TV become the babysitter...be active with the children and find them activities other that the 'tube'.

What everyone else said. Kids are amazing at finding things to do which are entertaining and mind expanding and fun. I didn't watch TV much as a kid and I now have very little access to it. I find it kind of appalling when people get so excited about a TV show or whatever. (Although I'm not entirely innocent - I do own my fair share of boxed sets for rainy days.)

yes, do it. I'm 17, and I used to watch a lot of tv, but now the internet has taken over. The internet is the new tv. But whether that applies to your kid has a lot to do with how old your child is. Anyway, I wish I had spent more time DOING things than watching tv. I mean, I'm not brain dead or anything because of it, I just feel that a kid has better things to do. Same goes with video games, even though I never play them.
But yes. Studies have shown that kids who watch tv more weigh more. Also, your kid could be doing a lot better things with their time. Depending how old they are, buy them some toys or some crafts or something. They would have more fun with that anyway. It would also stimulate their imagination and creativity. Toys and/or crafts are the way to go. ALso spend time with them. That way they won't have time to watch tv! Play games with them, write a story together (I used to do that with my mom).
In order to successfully limit your child's tv time, you have to give them other options of things to do.

If you are able to legally posses a firearm, I suggest you take a trip to your local gun shop and purchase a large caliber handgun (preferably .50 caliber). Load your TV into the trunk of your car, take it to a secluded area far, far, far outside of city limits, and blast it to pieces! Problem solved. You can also smash it with a 10lb sledge hammer if that's a more financially sound avenue for your monthly budget. Ciao!

My wife and i married six years ago, and we each had a son from previous marriages. They were 12 and 8 at the time. When we bought our house and moved our two families into one home, we decided to disconnect from television, and it's been one of the best things we could have done for our boys. And for ourselves also!
They objected at first but really adapted to it faster than i think either of us expected. Children will always find other, and we feel healthier, ways of entertaining themselves. It's been six years and i don't see us ever reconnecting to the "idiot box"
ever again.
good luck

Debi has it right.
I don't have kids, & I don't have a TV either for the last 2 years.
Sometimes I have wondered about the kids. Never wondered about the TV. One screen in the house is enough.

if your child is a preschooler then limit tv viewing up to 1 hour a day according to a child development pediatrician. It really depends. i understand how tired you are to organize activities for your kids. tv is not that evil just make sure that they watch wholesome shows. better if you bring them to parks if possible. social activities are very important for kids. bring them to church activities as well.

took my pre-schooler to her well-child check up and the doctor recommended no more than 1-2 hours of "screen time" a day. this includes tv, computer, video games, movies, etc.
now that being said, i do know that it is easier said than done. good luck!

You are the parent. Be bold and get rid of the T.V. all together and let your kids know how serious you are.

how much do they watch per day? I say if it's over 2 hours limit it. If they get mad at you just unplug it or hide it. How old are your kids?
