A stinger (aka burner) is an injury to the brachial plexus (nerves in the shoulder). Usually it occurs when hit in a contact sport and the head and neck are pulled in opposite directions, stretching the plexus. It also can occur when the head is pushed towards the shoulder, compressing the plexus.
Signs and symptoms usually include pain, numbness, and / or tingling through the neck, shoulder, and arm to hand. Loss of strength (can't lift the arm) is also common. Stingers or the effects of stingers can last a few seconds to days or weeks.
The most common treatment is rest, ice, anti-inflammatory meds. Once inflammation has decreased, the patient should work to regain strength, stability, and mobility of the neck and shoulder.
