When they chase each other, or fight over food, you know they are fighting. But if they ignore each other, andmind their own business, you know everything is cool. Never put Male Betas in the same tank together, theyll kill each other.

Any pet store personnal would be able to answer this question or a good book on fish. However there is a really easy answer i can think of. If they don't get along they will simply kill each other. Nature can appear cruel but in nature it is the strongest the survive.

You really really need to talk to someone knowledgeable BEFORE you buy them! What happens if you get them home, and one kills the other? Talk to the person at the store, AND do a little research before you buy, as I have seen instances where people may WORK in a pet store and NOT know what they are talking about. But, at least ask!
If you have already bought them and you are wondering if they are getting along...if they are not chasing each other, and biting each other, then they are probably "getting along". It will be obvious in a few days if they are going to fight.

Really all depends on what kind of fish. You should stick to one kind of fish if they are an agressive breed. For example, ciclids-such as oscars, Jack Dempsey's, or beta's-should be kept with their own kind. Most other fish get along pretty well in community tanks. If they hide or chase each other, they probably don't get along. lol

Count them when you put them in the tank. Next day count again!
Are there less fish? This will be indicative of how compatible they are with each other.

if they get along, they'll swim around each other and if they don't, the bigger one will attack the smaller one and the smaller one will slowly loose it's finns
