We spent $135.00 on our setup. We got a $80.00 birdcage to modify into a rat habitat, bedding (carefresh), pellet food (best kind because the rats don't just pick out what they want...more nutritious), chew blocks, mineral block, water bottle, and a few other treats...paid $3.99 each plus tax for the rats (2)...then we ended up going through 6 rats (in a 3 week period) because the breeder that supplied the petstore had sick rats (neighbor gave us a guinea pig, so we have a guinea now instead of rats)...get the rat from an individual breeder,(around $15-$20 for the rat), or a rescue org. It will run somewhere around $20-$35 for a vet visit if it gets sick (that does not include meds) which is common for most animal vet visits.
Good luck with your rats!

It would be cruel to get just one - they are social animals so you really need to have two. I have 3 rats, they each cost about $5. You can usually get good deals on cages from ebay; my cage retails at like $100 but I bought it on ebay for $60. I would skip the aquarium, they're heavy, fragile, and a real pain in the butt to clean. Also, an aquarium isn't really big enough for two rats. Go for a ferret cage. The cost of up keep is pretty low, maybe like $10-$15 a month for the food and litter.

Well I breed rats and I sell them for $2-5, my 3 level cage was $30, my 10 gallon aqarium was $20, the bag of foor was about $8, and the bedding is about $10. but it all depends on where you go. Make sure you get a healthy rat. Dont forget a water bottle and a food dish.

They are very intelligent and social creatures, they are often happier if living with other rats. Boys are more calm and love to sit on laps, girls love to wander and are hyper and skittish, if you decide to get more than one be sure they are the same gender unless you want lots of kittens (baby rats), or house them seperatly.
Enjoy, and Good Luck!

Try to get a cage instead of an aquarium because rats love climbing and they have more of a chance of having some health problems in aquariums because they get hot easily....
My rats cost about...70$ but you'll need to have money afterwards to continually buy food, toys & bedding.

I got my rats at pet world and they cost like $10. I think it kind of depends on were you get them. I heard that at some places they can cost like $30.
