Not to correct Kate or any other answer, but, you need to have it diagnosed. It could be one of the sensors. You forgot to put the make, model, and year of the vehicle. You would get more answers from people that have the same car as you.

A check engine light can come on for something as simple as a gas cap being left loose on your car or for something more complex as an emissions problem or engine misfire. Depend on the year of your vehicle is how you find out what it is...If it is obd 1 or 2 you can go to a shop or parts dealer and ask them to scan your vehicle for codes...then go from there.

this might indicate that your engines computer has detected a problem.if the light stays on then it should be considered a number one pritiory to get it checked .if the light came on and at some point went out then it may not be a very serious issue. when the light comes on and stays on this is knowm as a hard code. if the light comes on and then off its known as a soft code.

It means that there's some kind of problem with your car. Any mechanic will have a tool where they can plug it into the engine and figure out what the engine is complaining about.

Is it the Check Engine Light? You need to get it scanned for codes to know what it needs.
Is it The Servine Engine Soon Light? It needs the oil changed.
Big difference in lights, but many people get them confused.

You can get an OBDII scanner from the auto parts store for $70 that will tell you what that light means on any car in the last ten years. Then you can answer that question for all your friends and look like a genius.
I will comment on others answers. Kate is an idiot.

What type of car?
Some newer cars have computer chips that may falsely read that there is a problem, or it could indicate you really have a problem.
Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and see if it goes away.

You have a number of them, -- which one is it? It is shouting that it has a problem, which could become a "big problem" for you if you don't take care of this!

Check your water, oil, and brake fluid for starters! Loose any of these and you are in big trouble!

Plus it could mean a serious engine malfunction! So find out asap what it is!
