For "ordinary" antifreeze, the vehicle manufacturers generally recommend coolant changes every two to three years or 30,000 miles. Others say it's not a bad idea to change the coolant every year for maximum corrosion protection -- especially in vehicles that have aluminum heads, blocks or radiators. But such recommendations may soon be obsolete. Several antifreeze suppliers have just recently introduced "long life" antifreeze formulations that claim to provide protection for four years or 50,000 miles.

CAUTION: These new long life coolants provide extended life only when used in a clean system mixed with water. If mixed with ordinary antifreeze and/or old coolant in a system, the corrosion protection is reduced to that of normal antifreeze (2 to 3 years and 30,000 miles).

Testing it will give you the best answer and by taking a sample and looking at it can give you some idea as well. Temperature rating is done with a simple gage can be purchased at your auto parts store. Floating beads or a pointer indicator are the most common. Slightly more sophisticated ones can measure PH but a repair shop is the best way to get a accurate answer for that. Cloudy rusty appearance indicates a good chance the cooling system needs a flush and new anti-freeze added.

I change mine every year . It doesn't cost much to keep the system fresh . I have seen cars with service records showing good maintenance with heavy rust deposits . Just because its pretty and green doesn't mean the rust inhibitors haven't broken down.

I would recommend every two years , but every year if you can afford the $8

.

Every three years is fine as long as you flush the system well. It takes some work to get all the old junk flushed out of everywhere.
