Usually 10% over or under is acceptable, but anything else will be graded down. So for a 400 word essay you could faesibly type between 360-440 words and not be penalised for it. Honestly though, your teacher has an estimate of how the essay should look on paper (e.g. a page, a page and a half etc.) and they won't be counting the number of words on a page (unless they're really obsessive), assuming you're handing it in on paper. If you're emailling it, they would be more stringent because they can do a word count, so anything over/under 10% would be easily seen.

No. When a teacher specifies an amount, there is a specific reason. Are you sure is wasn't a minimum of 100 words?. In this case, a 100 word essay, the object is to be concise. Four times is too much. Look for sentences not on topic. (Example: Look for sentences which are not on topic.) Look for grammar as in the last sentence where I included 2 unnecessary words. These are a couple of techniques you can use to shorten the essay. Newspaper stories are excellent examples of brevity and imparting maximum information in few words.

No. You will get penialized for having to many words. Teachers wnat you to be able to pull out the most important information for this essay. You are limited to 100 words and if you go over by a sentence that is fine but no more than that.
You will get a lower grade turning this work in. It is not what the teacher is asking for.

I'm finding it strange that you are writing a 100-word "essay." The average paragraph in an essay has about 300 words. 100 words is about 5 sentences, probably! That's not much of an essay!

It's possible you might get penalised for being way too long - see if you can be more concise in your answers and make sure you have stuck to the topic. Person marking may get annoyed and mark you down as it will take much longer than all the others - make it shorter and snappy and exciting to read.

maybe it means that you have too much fluff and/or rambling in your essay. try to boil it down and make your sentences full and dense with information.
