If you quit a job you are not eligible for unemployment compensation. Likewise if you are fired and your employer can prove gross misconduct or violation of company policy. Once you are re-employed, you are no longer eligible as well. If you are caught working for someone who is paying you cash, your benefits will stop and you will have to repay any money you received under unemployment benefits. These are just a few of the circumstances that would alter your eligibility for benefits. I'm sure there are others.

Finding a job or not actively seeking one are the most common.

If it is learned that you got fired from the last one for misconduct, you would probably lose it, too.
