John Wayne. Set the stereotype for what a real man was supposed to act like.

Jimmy Stewart. Performed in hundreds of movies. Drama to comedy and everything in between. And didn't let his stuttering slow him down!

Al Pacino. Just like Jimmy Stewart. Covers all ends of the movie spectrum.

Dustin Hoffman. Played everything from mentally challenged to a woman!!

Walter Matthau. He always played a great curmudgeon.

Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and
Jamie Foxx. My reason for each of them is the same, versatility.
They can do both comedy and drama and are not afraid to take roles in films that may not be big money makers--integrity. I would have a different list for earlier film.

Charlise Theron, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, gosh but there just aren't the roles for women and one of my favorites is the actress who had the lead in Fargo and 2nd lead in North Country and she is married to one of the Farley brothers......
My reasons are the same as those given above.

Maggie Smith because I never seen her in an unconvincing role
Meryl Streep because she also acts flawlessly and has believable accents.
Sally Fields...ditto
Olympia Dukakis
Helen Mirren
these are all people who to me are great actors and created believable roles...there are others who I feel aren't really acting but just 'being themselves' on screen...ie Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn...these people just continually played the same character (themselves) in different roles.
...just in my opinion...
