Tennis is a game with lots of ups and downs. Most people play their best 25% of the time. They play their worst 25% of the time, and they play in the middle 50% of time. So it's normal to play well sometimes, and play poorly at other times. A lot of the time it's mental. If you don't think positively, you probably won't do well. If it's a matter of your strokes not being consistant, then hitting against a wall or using a ball machine is great because it grooves your strokes. The more you play, the better! Also, when I have problems with consistancy, I try to play less point play and more drills. This also helps to groove my strokes. Anyway, good luck in the next tourney!

Be calm. And DON'T THINK. Never think while playing tennis, just hit the ball, and don't think where you should land the ball or whether you should give a spin or lob or anything, don't think about the point, don't think whether you're losing or whether you're winning. All of them would just make you nervous, and lose your concentration and make you miss your ball. Anyway, if your playing partner gives you a really hard smash you won't have the time to think.

And jeff spin is absolutely right. Don't practice too much in tennis, without an instructor (who knows what he's doing) to tell you that your forehand is wrong. Since repetitiveness in tennis breeds incorrectness that you think is right, you'll be so used to an incorrect stroke that you'll unconsciously use a stroke incorrectly, and get mad at a bad stroke.

I'm so surprised no one has counseled you to take tennis lessons. They're the only effective way to improve your technique and thereby improve your consistency.

Please don't listen to the well-intentioned advice of others to Practice, Practice, Practice. You'll only be ingraining improper technique, making it that much more difficult for you to learn the proper technique.

First take lessons and learn the proper technique, then go Practice, Practice, Practice.

My girlfriend leaves me alone for days upon end during a tournament. Gives me loads of time to work on my forehand though.

Mental concentration is very important too. keep your mind clear and focus on the game. Don't be intimidated by the other player because sometimes it'll make you crack if you are under alot of pressure.
Good luck to you and keep playing =)
