My mother recently went through a divorce. She has the 3 children, and is trying to take care of them on her own. He doesn't want to pay child support, has bounced support checks, and is regularly late with the checks. I am in the Army and want to help her. I can't find any womens agencies or help. She also doesn't have an attorney because she can't afford one, and she doesn't even have a permanent place to call home at the moment. Can someone please provide some guidance to this problem? Thanks. She lives in California

Legal Aide, would take a case, that would help with the attorney. Now, California guidelines are so different. Yet, it's worth a shot, have her go to the local Social Rehabilitation Services and request service for the children. They can also set-up a case management worker that will place her and the children in emergency housing. Tell her to speak with boldness and don't take NO for an answer. It's going to work out ... You take care!:)

Tell your mother to go to one of the elementary schools near where she is staying and talk with the principal and/or school counselor. They would know where she can apply for assistance, and a court appointed attorney can plead her case. There are agencies to protect the welfare of mothers and children in the state of California. Your mother can get financial help, medical help and low income housing.

she should go apply for food and shelter assistance with the Dept of Social Services. She's the person we pay those taxes for! If she is awarded assistance, they will go after the father for his support. She won't have to pay or do anything about that. Everyone is so much nicer about helping women, she should not be afraid to go for help.
If you look on the internet, you will see all the programs available for her. And usually you can call the Red Cross for immediate help. Best of luck.

When I got my divorce from my husband, he fought me tooth and nail....I won..then came the child support for our two kids. He didn't want to pay anything at all. I went to the Child Support Division here where I live and paid them $25.00 and got him back in court..he paid for the child support and did not like it one bit. He grumbled every time he had to pay and he PAID THEM and then they paid me. Got a check every month with out fail from them. And when it was over...I even got the interest that had built up there with them as well and he did not like that either.

She needs to go to something like social services and get a free attorney or one that will work on a contingency fee. If you can, even send her the retainer for an attorney. She needs help.

The California Department of Child Support Services (http://www.childsup.cahwnet.gov/) offers free services. Your mom should contact them if she has not already. Then, she should apply for welfare, if necessary. She will have to sign over her child support claim to the State of California in all liklihood and they will go after her ex for the public assistance.

Tell her to go to her local DHS office. They can provide her with a home, money for a car, and also an attorney. This is not saying that she is poor just because she needs help from the DHS office, that is what it is for. They will be able to help her.

if you want to help, is there any way you could pay her legal fees for her so that she can get a lawyer? . . he should be MADE to pay child support and the court system can make sure that's being done . . you also might want to contact the social services office where your mom lives . . they might be able to offer support . . . . other than that, I'm not sure there's more you can do . . .

She can get free legal aid at the courthouse. She should also go to DHS where they can give her food stamps, and most likely a check every month to help her with everything. Good luck
