If the set is truly white-washed as you say, it will only have streaks of color in it - meaning the oak grain still comes through. Also, if the paint is water-based ( and I believe it is), you could probably just apply a stain (oak stain of course) directly over the paint, and come up with a very nice looking finish. You may even retain some of the white-wash characteristics, but the oak stain would be predominate. I've seen the effect before, and it looks pretty good.
However, if the set needs TLC (and I'm not sure what that means) It may mean sanding, repair, etc. In which case you'd have to reconsider just applying a top stain. Good luck

Sounds like you found a real treasure. If you are too lazy to sand, lol, yes you can paint over the white wash if it isn't flaky and is in good condition, no I would not use spray paint, shame on you. It would probably look great sanded and restained but if you want paint, just use low gloss acrylic/latex paint, not oil based because that is more of a pain. Use the little sponge applicators if you don't want brush strokes, which i guess you might have if you use a brush. Hope it turns out for ya.

If it is real whitewash, painting over it is likely to result in a mess. Whitewash does not bond particularly well, and will almost certainly come off in the painting process. So I would strip it. I approach this with some trepidation; I once stripped a bathroom door to re-paint it. It had several coats of paint on it, and by the time I bought all the stripper needed for the job, it would have been cheaper to buy a new door -- not to mention all the work and mess.

NO...dont paint over it..you say its needs TLC yet you dont want to put any time or effort in its keep. Sand it down....then see what you are dealing with...you may want to stain it then, or simply seal it, and BTW I shudderred when you said spray paint it....omg..nooo
