The older "Swiss Family Robinson" was made in 1960. A Swiss settler family is shipwrecked on a desert island. Directed by Ken Annakin. Starring John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur. Blue Lagoon (1980) did not have a family, but was made in the general time frame that you indicated. And Paradise Lagoon (1958) is older than you indicated, but it does involve a family stranded on a deserted island in a cooler environment. Set in turn-of-the-20th-century England.

The person who said "Lucas" is correct. My Bodyguard has the guy who is another student that everyone is afraid of. It's not a handyman in that movie. But, it's another good one!
