Ease out the clutch and ease down the gas. Thats all you gotta do, it's one of those things you have to do for yourself and hard to explain. Punch it and dump the clutch for great burnouts!!

Wow...that's so neat! My first car was a stick-shift and it brings back such great memories :) Well, it will take some practice, patience and a sense of humor. Try to find a big empty parking lot and give it a go: Put the gear in first (you'll have to clutch for this) then, you have to ease up on the clutch while depressing the gas pedal SLOWLY.....the car will begin to move forward and you can give it a bit more gas. As your speed increases you'll need to shift to 2nd gear: Depress the clutch again and shift, you can increase the gas a bit then release the clutch again.....this will continue throughout the first 3 gears and, depending on how much room you have, onward through the 4th. It's difficult to actually compose this.....it's like learning to ride a bike......you just need to practice. Remember that you MUST have the clutch pedal depressed BEFORE you shift gears and don't forget that all the while, you still have to stear the vehicle as well. Driving a stick is fun and you'll eventually get used to it and become a "pro". BTW: do you live where it snows or is hilly/mountainous? Snow & ice present all sorts of different conditions to the novice shifter and so does driving the on hilly terrain.....again, practice before undertaking any unplowed roadways and icy streets! Have fun!

Go to a parking deck to practice goin up hills and such. Come to a complete stop on the incline, and practice not stalling. Its a combo of letting off the clutch enough to where you dont roll backwards, letting off the brake, and then slowly throttling and releasing the clutch similar to a regular start.

Just get some practice on private roads away from traffic b/c i jumped right into a 10 hour road trip in my first manual. Scariest thing was when everything came to a complete stop in the rain (even harder in a manual) and it was stop and go traffic on a nice big incline... haha, that was a shock.

Yah, just get some practice and get comfortable with driving it before you jump into 5 oclock traffic... thats the worst in a standard.

Oh, once you get used to low speeds (under 45), hit the highways at night or whenever there isnt much traffic. Its not the cruising, its the acceleration that takes the skill.

Driving a clutch is just a matter of being able to let the clutch out at a good even keel and then use the acelertor at the right time. Do this in unison. Once you get good at it, it becomes simple. Just don't wear your clutch out. Costs lots of money. Let your clutch out slowly , while you step on the acelerator. You may stall the engine, or do lots of jumping, until you get good at it. A beginner is very hard on the wear and tear of the clutch. Good luck.

Do not go on any big hills that have lights or a stop sign when learning how to drive a stick. Also do not go up any when the roads are bad. In bad weather gear down to slow to afoid slipping on ice but never shift lower than 2nd gear.
