to college for just one year (e.g. Stephon Marbury from Georgia Tech, though he did grew up in New York City)? But for international players they just say what country they are from (e.g. Yao Ming from China). Sounds silly doesn't it.

Players are usually announced by their alma matas due to the popularity of college basketball. Like most other professional sports, players are drafted into the pros. To answer the question of why international players are announced by the country they are from is because technically international players are drafted from the national team they played for which is usually their country. (i.e. Yao Ming from China, Peja Stoyokavich from Serbia Montenegro). The last place they played before they became pro would be their alma mata (or what is announced). For example Dikembe Mutumbo is of African descent. However, he was recruited by Georgetown University, hence when his name was announced, he was named as a Georgetown player, not Dikembe Mutumbo from Africa.

My private opinion is that a tuition measure is essential, and no participant will have to have got to decide on among tuition and the NBA (e.g. AI). I learn whatever on espn (in an editorial approximately Greg Oden) announcing that the hazard of accidents within the ncaa was once rather very very small, now not sufficient for it to be a aspect in creating a choice. I simply consider that there's a adulthood degree that comes from being in tuition... and those men are going to retire from basketball sooner or later, and what then??? They now not simplest have to have a tuition measure and a few different capabilities... however in addition they have to understand how to control their cash and comprehend that it may not be there endlessly. While I most likely consider talent degree is concerned (e.g. Kobe, KG and Lbj) - I consider the gamers will have to consider of themselves and their long run first - and that suggests, for me, staying in tuition and getting a measure, and finding out learn how to be a larger basketball participant on the tuition degree (e.g. Tim Duncan). This is an excessively intriguing discipline, and I could like to interview beyond and gift gamers to peer what their ideas are.

Players usually pick what will be said there and it can really be whatever they want as long as it's true. For example, right after Bob Huggins was fired as the coach from Cinci, Kenyon Martin had announcers announce his high school rather than Cinci because he really liked Huggins when he played for him and wanted to disassociate himself from the University.

There is nothing silly about it. In the NBA and NFL players have always been announced by what college they went to.

I agree, it's very silly in this day and age.

Football does it too ~ college ball used to be very popular but it's been 20 years since the heyday of march madness of ncaa basketball.
