Dance is a sport. I know, everyone else who replied agree and disagree.
Hi. I am a 13 year old girl, and I have been dancing since I was four(nine years...)
In my whole life, I have done ballet, tap, jazz, and pre-point(the beginning of being on the tip toe ballet shoes. I'm saying this for non-dance people who don't know what point is at all..). In third grade, I did competition with ballet and tap, and won first place in the third competition for ballet.
Dance takes a lot of energy to do. Its nt just twirling with your hands above you're head.
You need to know how to control every part of your body.
Think splits are easy? Think again... Think doing a batmá(high kick...) is easy? How about not moving the upper part of your body(tummy up) and moving one leg without moving the other?
Yeah. So what if soccer requires getting hurt. Ever tried doing a perfect arabesque? That hurts a lot until you get it right.

So. Dance is painful, even when you can successfully do something.
Dance is competitive. I did competitions.
Dance is physical. Try going in sync with a slow song. And leaping across the floor. And stretches.
Dance is also flexible. I am probably as fit, maybe more than a football player.
So, yes, dance is a sport. You can't orove me wrong in any of these ways. If you think its not physical/painful, come on over. I'll make you feel pain from it(stretches). Thanks for reading this...and taking up about a minute of your time to read this.

Of COURSE it is! If you watch videos of dancers' performances, you can tell that it MUST have taken a long time to learn it. Most people that say those kind of things know for a fact that they would never be able to do all those turns and jumps, because dancing takes a combination of skills from other sports: strength, determination, balance, coordination, patience. Take it from someone who's stuck with dance since they were 2 years old: dance is just as much a sport as soccer or basketball, and no one can tell you otherwise. Besides, if you love it so much, I say stick with it, girl!

I think they are telling you that because they don't see the sport aspect of it as the most important.

In its most serious form, Dance is art. It is art that requires a lot of physical fitness, and yes, injuries can occur as well. Not only it is art, it is also a sport, it can be a hobby, it can be a recreation.

Dancesport (Competitive Ballroom and Latin) is officially recognized as a sport by Olympic Committee, there are competitions and there are competing teams. So yeah, it is a sport, and dancers are called danceport athletes. However, despite of that, one should not forget that it is an art.

So those who are telling you it is not a sport either think it's an art (serious dancers) or they are telling you it is a recreation (people who barely dance at all. Yeah, in my world, dancing twice a months is barely dancing at all, sorry. ). Just don't take it personally, don't try too hard to convine them because they don't have the same experience you do. Especially your doctor will tell you it's not even a sport because doctor will tell you anything to make you stop injuring yourself. LOL. Yeah, try to be careful, please.

Because even ballet could win awards, there's not much to dancing. Anyone can join it, and some people think that sports should have specific types of people: people that can pay a good sized price that is. Don't be discouraged though, some people don't think of biking and skate-boarding as sports either, yet the fanatics consider it an "extreme" sport.
People interested in something have different opinions than those uninterested. Don't let them get you down,

Dance is an Art form, you are more of an artist because you create the movements and emotions that are shown in dance.
