Like the Above answer stated, A true Freshman is sumone who plays in their VERY first year of college. Its as opposed to, like the above answerer stated, a "Red shirt Freshman" who may be 1 year into college, but has defered his athletic eligibility for 1 year, his/her true freshamn year, for whatever reason. And once you have declared as a Redshirt, even if yer in yer second year, THats when yer eligibility to play begins. so in theory, you can graduate and still have College athletic eligibility and be able to play whatever sport it is you play. Redshirts can go to their teams practices and work out with team and attend classes on full scholarship if they have a scholarship, but they do not participate in games..thus preserving that one year of eligibility... thats why you have 5th year seniors in college sports..no, theyre not dumb/stupid academically lol, they just redshirted.

True freshman is a term in NCAA sports, where a collegiate athlete plays for the team in the first year of college. It indicates a student-athlete has not redshirted to protect NCAA eligibility.

He plays the year he comes into the school as a freshman and plays without being red shirted. When your red shirted you as a freshman are not able to play in any games.
