High blood pressure is the number one killer, period. The best way to treat it is see a Doctor -- it can numerous causes and you need to find the cause and go through the tests. He will give you drugs and you should take them, after you have high blood pressure, under no circumstances should you feel you can treat it yourself. However, if you want to prevent high blood pressue, avoid salty and fatty foods, and walk or swim every other day. Even then, sometimes if you do all the right things you still can get high blood pressure. It can be inherited or you could have a stressful job. I'm sure you have seen newspaper articles about people who exercised didn't have an ounce of fat and ate only health food only to die from high blood pressure. Sometimes you see articles about high school atheletes who live a good life style but still die from high blood pressure. You should have your blood pressure tested regularly once you reach your twenties. You shouldn't even think of taking chances with it, the best way is to see your Doctor and do what he says and take what he prescribes.

Get regular exercise, maintain a normal weight, control stress, if you get three or more readings where the top number is over 140 or the bottom number is over 80 you need to talk to your doctor about medication and then take it regularly. Salt intake use to be considered very important in the control of BP but it has been found that in many patients it really doesn't affect it much so you will need to evaluate that on a personal basis.

Go to the library (or Amazon) and check out THE RELAXATION RESPONSE by Herbert Benson. Following the simple, research proven instructions in this book will improve anyone's blood pressure, and will not interfere with diet, exercise or medication.
It represents a lifestyle change, though; you must keep doing it to get the benefits. But it benefits more than your blood pressure. Good luck.

Watch the salt intake, loose weight (if you need to), exercise. Programs to induce relaxation like Tai Chi and meditation are also helpful. Be sure to see a doctor before starting anykind of exercise program, take medications as prescribed.
