I recently heard about Letterboxing and it sounds like a good hobby to get us out of the house. But I don't know anything about making stamps. Has anyone tried Letterboxing and is it fun and safe to do?

Thanks! These answers are both great and I'm glad to have the feedback. I'm glad to know more about Letterboxing by people who actually do it!

I too recently learned about letter boxing - It is a GREAT family activity. I introduced the game to my Cub Scouts and now their family and friends are getting involved. Yes it is fun, if you are not comfortable with an area, then pass up finding that box. If you enjoy a mystery and love a treasure hunt then you will enjoy 'Letter-boxing'.
There is a web site that tells you all you need to know about the Hunt and making stamps. We (my four kids and my self) each made our own from 'Pink School Erasers'. Just choose a simple design or shape. This was half the fun of letter-boxing. Tell friends about this and by word of mouth you will be hunting treasure every weekend. The below links came from the same site...just to help you get started creating a stamp. Have Fun.

We have gone letterboxing with our kids and they love it! It's just like treasure hunting. We've never had any safety issues, but just use good judgement. For instance, don't go out at night, don't go alone, don't go in bad neighborhoods, etc. We bought cheap painting type sponges with designs at a local hobby store and they work great!
