If the tree is just missing the bark it will be fine. But if the cambium layer is gone then the tree is dead. By removing the vascular system of the tree it has no way to eat. If just the bark is removed the area should been green which is the cambium.

You should check with an arborest at a higher end nursery; I believe if it isn't too bad or too far gone, there is a product you can paint on it to seal it; but that outer bark is a vital part of the tree, so I'm not sure of the success rate.

Save it of course! I don't want it too soggy! I jam my whole hand into the cup and try to grab it or use a spoon if there is one nearby! Unless I'm in a bad mood, then I just let it drown cause I'm too lazy to get it out. What about you.

As others have said, once the tree is girdled you have lost it. In future, spend a buck or two for a plastic tree guard (available at garden supply or hardware stores). They will protect your trees from rodent or livestock damage, string trimmers etc.

yes, you have to harvest graft material from a green limb, make smooth cut all the way arround make the graft fit tight and wrap it with waxed paper or paint on bees wax, get a pro out to do it as soon as possible and you may save it.

I believe you can. You will need to wrap it . Go to a garden center tell them your problem and they 'll see you get the right stuff. Info should be on line too.
