Well, if you want the protagonist to be a slave, I think you may want to tell it from an American History point of view.
The parents can die in the Revolutionary War (America) and the young woman is sold into slavery. This can be in the South (of course). She can't read or write, but she can sew. She makes a quilt - which is a map to escape to the North through the Underground Railroad.
This actually happened. Slaves used quilts as 'maps' to escape to the North. You can do research to find out how they did it!
The title could be- something like "Sadie's Map" or "Hide in Plain Sight."
"Hide in Plain View" is the title of a book (nonfiction) by an author who studied the use of quilts in the Underground Railroad.

The War Within
Start the story with the girl. The details of the battle in which her family was killed and her graphic memories that start to take shape. Then she starts to understand where her life is going the the struggles that start to take place. The decisions to come will shape her path ahead and the life she will lead.
Good luck and let me know how the story comes along - you have a great idea - run with it!
just read your addition - war and the damage within -
spirit code - that could mean the code of her spirit or the code you want to include in the story.

The Survival Code
Veronica had just blown out the candles on her tenth birthday cake when the soldiers entered.
The war had gone on for months but no one expected them this far north. Her dad, a communications officer, reached for the pistol he always kept nearby, forbidden to Veronica even to touch. The men shouted and released a deafening volley of gunfire. Blackness overtook her.
Veronica woke under he mother. "Mom, get up! I can hardly breath!" She didn't move. Scared, Veronica manged to work herself out from under her mom. Veronica looked down at her hands, covered with blood. She looked at her clothes, drenched in red. Then she finally looked around. Her entire family, dead. Blackness overtook her.
She woke hours later. The sun no longer shone. She wept for what seemed like hours, til no more tears came. Then she realized she had three choices, stay her and die with her family, go after the soldiers -suicide if she could even find them- or head east.
Veronica remembered her dad joking only days earlier, what's the most important code in the war? Her brother said it was the 10K byte incryption code their dad used for secure communications. His dad laughed, "No, the most important thing in time of war is survival. At headquarters we call it the 'Survival Code.' Do what ever it takes. That's why we are leaving next month for the north."
We never did move north.
Veronica realized she must survive. Only miles away, the border could be reached in hours. Her country never did get along with that eastern country, but they were neutral if she remebered her dad's frequent talks with her mom. Besides, though they didn't like her people, it's not like they would make her a slave. . . .
Just an opening volley. Note you must start books nowdays with a bang. Right at the change in the hero's life. Good luck and expect a lot of hard work ahead.
