Yes they can. JUst dont over fill it and be sure to wipe you hands off before lighting it.

In most "disposable" lighters it is butane - that comes out as a gas (it's only a "liquid" because it is underd pressure inside those little plastic cases) - can't be used in a regular Zippo type lighter. There are lighter fluids, like from Ronson.
