Install XP into a directory other than \windows. Put it in something like \windowsnew.
That is about the only safe way.

You can do a restore install which will only reinstall the operating system but any adjustments or tweaks you made to those will be reverted to the default. When you start the install from a disc it'll check if there is already an operating system on the computer and give you the option to either install new or run the recovery console. Select new, the next window will ask if you want to keep the current file system, select yes and there you go. If you are reinstalling from an embedded hidden partition (pre-installed) This is usually not possible. In that case your better off trying to run the file and settings wizard and putting your files onto an external hard drive or discs, the reinstall and rerun the file and settings wizard to put the files back.

You can try the recovery console on the XP CD, but you're probably out of luck because it doesn't usually work.
This is how I learned the value of running a data and a system backup. I wish you well.

during reinstalltion don't partition the drive and leave the system state alone. you will retain all you data (music, pictures, etc..) but you will have to reinstall all your applications (word, firefox, etc..).
