So, society today has terms like "tolerance" and "acceptance" to refer to one's attitude towards gay people or the gay community. I was wondering if "Tolerance" is a good thing to teach or not.

Personally, I believe Tolerance is stupid to teach, and that parents should be teaching their kids about Acceptance. You tolerate a person's stupid behavior, or a bunch of screaming five-year-olds, but you accept people for things they have no control over.

Just wondering what you all thought...

You tolerate something you don't believe in. You accept something you do.

I think you need to be able to do both and Tolerance is what you do when you are against what a person stands for but you know they have a right to exist the same as you do. Acceptance can also mean when you accept a persons limitations and do not hold it against them.

I try to accept that homophobes are just closeted self hating homosexuals and I try to tolerate their idiotic posts.

Tolerance is an act of not 'acting' according a certain situation.
Acceptance is the fact of not rejecting something, for example, the world is already going all twisted and crooked, do we accept this world ways, or do we tolerate it?. Neither one of these.
We are to accept things that we cannot change but we are not to tolerate something that is wrong, specially when is not legal yet.

Freedom of speech and all that rot: ideally, individual parents will strive to teach their children acceptance, but in the meantime the most we can require of people is tolerance. The ability to go about their daily lives alongside their queer peers.

The reason for tolerance is to let people be who they are

Accept the fact that they are different but have the same feelings
as we do..
